HeatShield Chimney Liner & Rebuild Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Liner & Rebuild in Westchester County: What to Know First

HeatShield chimney liner and rebuild work in Westchester County typically runs $2,100 to $7,800 depending on the liner system, how much masonry needs rebuilding, and whether we’re doing a partial or full tear-out. Most HeatShield jobs in the county are completed in one to two days once parts are on hand. We quote a firm price before any tool comes off the truck, and if we find the liner can be safely repaired instead of replaced, we’ll tell you that too. This page is for Westchester County homeowners with a HeatShield system who want straight answers about repair versus replacement. Call (914) 537-6479 and Wendell or one of his crew will pick up.

We are an independent HeatShield service provider. We’re not a franchise, not a national call center, and not authorized by the manufacturer. We’re a locally owned Westchester County chimney company that has worked on HeatShield systems for years and knows how they fail in this climate.

How HeatShield Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

HeatShield is an aftermarket ceramic coating applied to the inside of an existing flue. It’s a legitimate repair option for certain chimney problems, but like any lining system, it has failure modes. Here’s what we actually see in Westchester County homes:

  • Ceramic coating delamination on the first flue tile above the smoke shelf. This is the HeatShield failure we see most in Westchester County. The coating is applied as a spray-on ceramic that bonds to the clay tile. The first tile above the firebox takes the worst thermal shock, because it gets the hottest exhaust while still being close to cold outside air on the other side of the chimney. After five to ten heating seasons, the coating can lift away from the tile in patches. The symptom is usually small ceramic flakes showing up in the firebox or on the damper. Fix: we camera the flue to map the delamination, then mechanically remove the loose coating and reapply a compatible HeatShield ceramic patch. If delamination covers more than about a third of the flue, a stainless liner is the honest answer.
  • Clay tile joints compromised underneath a HeatShield coating. HeatShield seals the surface of the tile, but it doesn’t rebuild a tile structure that’s already shifting. In older Westchester County chimneys, freeze-thaw cycles take a toll. The mortar joints between clay tiles erode, tiles shift slightly, and the HeatShield coating bridges the gap until it can’t. Owners notice a faint smoky smell in the house even though the coating looked intact on last year’s inspection. We’ve pulled HeatShield material off flues where the tiles underneath had gaps you could put a finger through. Fix: when the substrate is failing, no coating will hold. We rebuild the flue or drop a stainless steel liner, and the HeatShield-coated tile gets fully removed in the affected section.
  • Improper original application leaving voids or pin holes in the coating. HeatShield application requires specialized equipment and a smooth, clean surface. Not every company that offers HeatShield gets it right. We’ve seen jobs in Westchester County where the coating was applied too thin near the top of the flue or over creosote that wasn’t fully removed. The result is uneven coverage that fails early. The giveaway is usually a rust-colored stain or moisture mark on the chimney exterior at a certain height, which tells us water is getting through a pinhole in the liner. Fix: camera inspection to identify thin spots, then a full-surface reapplication or a sleeve liner depending on severity.
  • Condensation streaking and acidic deterioration in the flue’s lower third. HeatShield is designed for gas and oil flues as well as wood. On gas flues, especially high-efficiency units that run cool, condensation forms and sits on the coating. Over time, acidic condensate eats at the ceramic. We see this in Westchester County homes where the furnace was upgraded after the HeatShield was installed and the flue now handles a different exhaust profile than it was designed for. Fix: evaluate the appliance and flue configuration. In many cases, the answer is a properly sized stainless liner rated for the appliance, not another coating.
  • Failed flashing above a HeatShield-coated flue causing water to soak the coating from behind. This one fools a lot of owners and a few sweeps. The HeatShield looks fine from inside, but the chimney crown or flashing has failed and water is getting between the masonry and the liner. When water freezes, it pops the coating off the tile. The symptom is usually crumbling chimney brick or a water stain on the ceiling near the fireplace, not an obvious flue problem. Fix: fix the water entry first, then assess the liner. Crown repair or rebuild, flashing replacement, and then a camera check to see if the HeatShield survived. Sometimes it did. Sometimes it didn’t.

Our HeatShield Chimney Liner & Rebuild Process

Here’s how a HeatShield chimney liner and rebuild job goes when you call Top Hat Chimney in Westchester County:

  1. 1
The call. You get a live person, day or night. We ask what you’re seeing and what kind of system you have. We schedule a time that actually works and give you a real arrival window. If the truck is running late, we call.
  2. 2
The inspection. Wendell or a crew member shows up in uniform and does a full camera inspection of the flue. You see the footage, right there on the screen. No mystery verdicts. We tell you in plain English what the HeatShield looks like, whether it’s failing, and what your options are.
  3. 3
The pricing. Before any work begins, you get a written price. That’s the number on the invoice. If we’re doing a partial rebuild, we tell you exactly which courses of brick are coming out. If it’s a liner replacement, we tell you which liner, which brand, and why.
  4. 4
The work. We remove the failing HeatShield material where it’s compromised. Depending on the situation, we either rebuild the flue with new tile, install a stainless steel liner (DuraFlex is our usual pick for relining), or reapply HeatShield to a properly prepped surface. If OEM HeatShield components are the right call for warranty-safe repair, we use them. If a quality aftermarket part does the same job at a fairer price, we’ll tell you that too.
  5. 5
The test. After the liner or rebuild is in, we run a full draft test and a camera pass through the finished flue. You see the result before we call the job done.
  6. 6
The guarantee. Every job gets our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. One call brings us back at no charge if something isn’t right.

What HeatShield Chimney Liner & Rebuild Costs in Westchester County

Here are the ranges we see most often in Westchester County:

Job Typical Range
Camera inspection with written report $175 - $325
Targeted HeatShield patch (small delamination area) $450 - $900
Full flue re-coat with HeatShield (after proper prep) $2,100 - $3,800
Stainless steel liner replacement (DuraFlex or equivalent) $2,400 - $4,400
Partial chimney rebuild (top 10-15 courses plus crown) $2,800 - $5,200
Full chimney rebuild from the roofline up $5,500 - $7,800

What moves the price? Chimney height and roof pitch, how much scaffolding or lift access is required, whether the flue tile underneath the HeatShield is salvageable, and whether we’re working around a tee section or an offset. A straight-up flue on a one-story home is a different job than a three-story chimney with two offsets.

We offer $40 off any repair over $200, a free second opinion on any written estimate you’ve received, no trip charge inside our service county, and 10% off always for seniors and veterans. Call (914) 537-6479 and we’ll give you a firm number before we start.

Why Westchester County Homeowners Call Top Hat Chimney for HeatShield Work

We’ve been at this since 1999. Wendell Pike founded Top Hat Chimney and still runs it. That’s over 29 years serving Westchester County, including plenty of older stone-and-brick homes up near the Teatown Lake Reservation where the fireplaces see real use every winter. If it doesn’t need doing, he’ll tell you that too.

You’ll get a chimney company with a published address, a license number, and an owner whose name is on the work. The crew is background-checked and uniformed. Phones are answered by a live person around the clock, and it may well be Wendell himself. We work on HeatShield systems regularly, and we also install and service DuraFlex and Gelco products, so you’re not locked into one brand’s answer. When a HeatShield coating is the right fix, we’ll say so. When a stainless liner will outlast it by twenty years, we’ll say that too.

The 90-Day Done Right Promise is in writing on every single job. Ask anyone on your street.
