Gelco Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Crown Repair: The Westchester County Owner’s Guide

A Gelco chimney crown repair in Westchester County typically runs $400 to $900 installed, depending on how much of the existing crown is salvageable and whether we’re rebuilding from the flue tile out. Most Gelco crown work we do is completed in a single visit, usually two to four hours on the roof. The way most folks find us is the same story: a water stain on the ceiling near the fireplace, or a hunk of crown material sitting in the gutter after a hard rain. Gelco crowns are built right, but nothing made of mortar and concrete loves a freeze-thaw cycle like the ones we get up here every January.

If you’ve got a cracked Gelco crown, you might not even know it yet. Water gets in, works its way down, and the first thing you notice is usually the smell of damp masonry in the firebox. By then the crown’s been failing for a season or two. The good news is a Gelco crown is one of the more straightforward repairs we do. Wendell Pike has been looking at these things across Westchester County since before some of these subdivisions had streetlights, and the fix is almost never as bad as the water damage makes it feel.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco builds crowns to fit their proprietary cap and chase systems, and the good news is most Gelco residential crowns share the same basic dimensions across their standard flue tile sizes. Where it gets tricky is the older Gelco setups from the 1990s and early 2000s. Those used a slightly narrower pour height, and if you bring a generic aftermarket crown form to one of those, you’ll be on the roof longer than you want trying to make it sit right.

The honest take on parts: Gelco’s own crown forms and precast crowns are good product. We stock the common sizes on the truck. If you have an oddball flue tile layout, we’ll custom-form the crown on site, which costs a bit more but fits exactly. Some customers ask about generic aftermarket crown forms to save money. On a standard 8×8 or 13×13 flue, a quality aftermarket form works fine and we don’t mind installing one if that’s what you want. On a Gelco system with an unusual chase layout, we’ll recommend the Gelco-specific part. We’re an independent chimney service in Westchester County, not affiliated with Gelco directly, but we’ve installed enough of their product to know what fits and what fights back. We also stock parts for DuraFlex and HeatShield systems, so if you’ve got more than one brand up there, we can handle it in the same trip.

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney or inside the firebox. A cracked crown lets rain and snowmelt seep straight down the masonry chase. By the time you see the stain, water’s been traveling for a while. Catch it before the stain turns into a drywall patch job too.
  • Chunks of mortar or concrete in the gutter or on the roof. Freeze-thaw cycles in Westchester County are brutal on crowns. Water gets into a hairline crack, freezes, expands, and pops a piece off. If you’re finding bits of crown on the roof after winter, that’s not normal wear. That’s failure.
  • A damp, musty smell coming from the fireplace, especially in summer. That smell is moisture trapped in the flue and masonry. In August, a wet chimney gets musty fast. It’s one of the most common calls we get in the off-season.
  • Visible cracks wider than a hairline when you look at the crown from ground level or a ladder. Not every crack means total replacement. Some can be sealed. But if the crack runs from the flue tile to the outside edge, water has a clear path down the chimney. That’s a crown that needs real attention.
  • Efflorescence, that white chalky stuff on the exterior brick. That’s salt being pushed out of the masonry by water moving through it. It means water has already gotten past the crown and into the brick. Clean it off if you want, but fix the crown first or it comes right back.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Westchester County, you’re looking at $400 to $900 for a full Gelco crown repair or replacement, installed. The spread depends on the crown’s size, how much demolition the old one needs, and whether we’re using a Gelco precast form or custom-forming on site. A small repair, like sealing minor cracks with a proper elastomeric crown sealer, runs on the lower end. A full tear-out and recast on a larger chase runs higher.

What’s included: removal of the old, failed crown material, prep of the flue tile and masonry top, installation of the new crown with proper slope away from the flue, and a 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the crown isn’t right, one call brings Wendell back. You get the price before a single tool comes off the truck, and the number you hear on the phone is the number on the invoice. No surprises. DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the straight answer: you can inspect the crown yourself if you’re comfortable on a ladder and the roof pitch is walkable. Look for the cracks we listed above. Take some pictures with your phone. That’s genuinely useful. What you shouldn’t do is get up there with a bag of mortar mix from the hardware store and start smearing it into cracks. That patch job fails in one or two freeze-thaw seasons because the crown needs proper slope and a bond that surface patching doesn’t give you. You’ll spend a Saturday, spend sixty dollars, and we’ll be back out in eighteen months doing the real repair anyway.

If the crown needs a full rebuild, that’s roof work with bags of mortar and cutting tools. It’s not a beginner DIY job, and a fall off a roof isn’t worth the savings. If it doesn’t need doing, Wendell will tell you that too. But if it does need doing, call (914) 537-6479 and we’ll come look. No trip charge inside the county, and we’ll show you what we’re seeing before we quote anything.
