Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Westchester County Owner’s Guide
We stock DuraFlex-compatible crown repair parts on our trucks and install them across Westchester County for $260 to $540, including the part, labor, and a written 90-Day Done Right Promise. The crown is the masonry and metal assembly sitting on top of your chimney chase or flue, and with DuraFlex installations it’s usually the termination cap collar, the storm collar, or the crown plate that goes first. Most people don’t notice until water shows up inside the firebox after a heavy rain, or the cap starts rattling in a March windstorm.
Here’s the thing about DuraFlex specifically: the liner pipe itself is tough stuff. The crown components around it are the wear parts. They take direct sun, ice, and snow all winter. In Westchester County, where freeze-thaw cycles hit hard from November through March, a crown assembly that would last fifteen years in a mild climate often gives up in eight or ten. The good news is the fix is usually straightforward and done in one visit.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex makes a few liner and termination systems, and the crown repair parts differ between them. The main lines we see in Westchester County homes are the DuraFlex SS (stainless steel) and DuraFlex AL (aluminum) series. The SS line uses a 316L stainless crown plate and collar set; the AL uses aluminum components that cost less up front but corrode faster anywhere salt air or heavy condensation is present, which includes a lot of older uninsulated chimneys in the county.
The compatibility gotcha most owners run into: the storm collar and crown plate are sized to the outside diameter of the liner, not the inside flue dimension. A 6-inch DuraFlex liner has a 6-inch inside diameter but a 6.25-inch outside; a 7-inch liner is 7.25 outside. If you order the wrong collar by inside measurement, it won’t seat. We measure on-site before quoting. We are an independent service company, not a DuraFlex corporate affiliate, so we carry both OEM DuraFlex components and quality aftermarket equivalents from HeatShield and Gelco that interchange correctly. If the OEM part is backordered, we’ll tell you what the aftermarket option costs and how it compares before you spend a dime.
Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. The crown plate or storm collar isn’t sealing. Water runs down the outside of the liner, bypasses the fireplace throat, and shows up as a damp spot or rust ring in the firebox. By the time you see this, the seal has been gone for a while.
- Visible rust or crusting on the crown plate. On the AL series this shows as white aluminum oxide. On the SS series it shows as rust staining from the fasteners or the galvanized chase top underneath. Either way, the waterproof seal is compromised.
- Rattling cap in the wind. The cap is mounted to the crown plate. When the plate bolts loosen or the collar slips, the cap vibrates against the chase. It sounds like someone left a loose piece of sheet metal on the roof, because that’s roughly what happened.
- Damp ceiling or attic staining near the chase. Water that gets past the crown runs down the outside of the liner inside the chase, then soaks into drywall at the first horizontal surface. By the time the stain shows, there’s been enough water to bother the insulation and framing.
- Birds or bees entering the chase. The storm collar or crown plate has shifted enough to leave an opening. In Westchester County we see starlings in spring and wasps in summer. Both are signs the crown assembly stopped fitting flush.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Westchester County, a DuraFlex crown repair runs $260 to $540 installed. The lower end covers a storm collar replacement and reseal on an accessible chase. The higher end covers a full crown plate, collar, cap adapter, and chase-top reseal, which is typical when the plate has been leaking for multiple seasons. The parts themselves run $40 to $180 depending on series and size; labor is $140 to $260, and haul-away of the old components is included. If the chase top or masonry below the plate has failed, we’ll show you the damage and price the additional work separately, never hidden in a lump sum. Every crown repair includes the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it leaks again inside ninety days, one call brings Wendell Pike and his crew back at no charge. Count on $40 off any repair over $200, and seniors and veterans get ten percent off, always.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do two things from ground level: look for water staining inside the firebox after rain, and listen for rattling on windy days. That tells you the problem is real. What you shouldn’t do is climb onto the roof with a tube of sealant and hope for the best. A crown that’s loose or cracked needs to be lifted, inspected underneath, reseated, and properly fastened, and working at the top of a chimney means standing on a sloped surface at height. People fall off roofs in this county more often than you’d think, and saving $250 isn’t worth a broken hip or worse. If the part is loose, call us at (914) 537-6479. Wendell will come out, confirm what’s failing, and give you the number before any work begins.
FAQs
In Westchester County’s climate, expect eight to twelve years from the original crown components, less if the cap has been hit by falling branches or the chimney is uninsulated and sweats condensation. The liner itself usually outlasts the crown components by a significant margin.
Sometimes. A storm collar that has simply slipped can be reseated and resealed for under $100. A cracked or rust-through crown plate should be replaced; patching buys a season at best. We’ll show you why on the job, and if it doesn’t need doing, Wendell will tell you that too.
Most DuraFlex crown repairs are done in under two hours on-site, from the time the ladder goes up to the time the old parts are in the truck. If we find additional damage to the chase top or flue, we’ll show you the camera footage and quote the additional work on the spot, no pressure.
Yes. We stock common DuraFlex SS and AL crown plates, storm collars, and cap adapters on the truck, along with compatible aftermarket equivalents from HeatShield and Gelco. If your size isn’t on the truck, it’s usually in our shop within two business days. Call (914) 537-6479 and we will tell you exactly what’s on board before we arrive.
