DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Westchester County Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps across Westchester County, with most replacements running $385-$675 fully installed, labor included. If you call before noon on a weekday, we can usually have a crew to your home within 48 hours. Most owners discover the cap has failed the same way: rain dripping into the firebox during a storm, or a rusted ring of metal sitting crooked at the top of the flue after a nor’easter finally finished it off.

The truth is, the cap does more than keep rain out. It keeps animals from nesting, keeps sparks from landing on your roof, and protects the top few feet of your liner from the weather that eats everything in this county eventually. When it fails, the damage starts quietly and costs more the longer it waits.

We’re an independent chimney service in Westchester County, not affiliated with DuraFlex. But we install their products because they hold up better than most of what we see up there.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex makes caps sized for their 304 and 316 stainless steel liner systems, which is what most Westchester County homes run when they’ve had a liner replaced in the last 15 years. The cap seats over the top of the flex liner, not the masonry flue itself, so the fit has to match the liner diameter exactly: 6-inch, 7-inch, or 8-inch are the ones we sell and install most often in this area.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips people up: a DuraFlex cap from one liner size will not work on another, and it won’t fit other manufacturers’ liners. We’ve had homeowners buy a cap online that “looked right” and then spend an afternoon on a ladder before giving up and calling us. If you’re not sure what you have, look at the metal tag near the top of the liner or check the invoice from your last liner job. No tag? A quick measurement of the liner’s outer diameter will tell us what we’re dealing with.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for DuraFlex specifically, we generally use their own caps. The clamping mechanism seats correctly, the gauge of the steel matches the liner, and we don’t have to walk a homeowner through why a cheaper universal cap warped within two years. The aftermarket options aren’t all bad, but with a DuraFlex liner, the OEM cap is what we’d put on our own chimney.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Water in the firebox after rain. This is the one everyone notices first. The cap’s crown has rusted through or the spark screen has pulled away, and now weather goes straight down the flue. You’ll see damp ashes, a musty smell, or actual puddles on the floor of the fireplace.
  • A tilted or leaning cap. The ring clamp that holds the cap to the liner has loosened, or the cap took a hit from a falling branch. Either way, it’s no longer seated flat, which creates a gap and lets rain in at an angle.
  • Rust streaks on the cap or liner. Cheap caps rust at the welds first. Once you see rust staining the cap crown, the end is coming. On a DuraFlex cap this should take 8-12 years; if you see rust after 3, it was the wrong steel or an aftermarket piece.
  • Animal noise from inside the chimney. Squirrels, raccoons, and birds all treat an open flue as an invitation. If the cap’s mesh has holes or the cap has shifted, whatever’s up there will find its way in. We’ve pulled live birds out of flues in Sleepy Hollow and Katonah more times than we can count.
  • Debris falling into the fireplace. Little chunks of mortar, rust flakes, or the occasional acorn. That means the cap is breaking down structurally, and pieces of it are coming loose and dropping.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Westchester County, expect to pay between $385 and $675 for a full DuraFlex cap installation, which includes the cap itself, any necessary adapter, removal of the old cap, and proper seating and securing of the new one. The range depends mainly on liner size, roof pitch and access, and whether the top of the liner needs any clean-up or adjustment before the new cap goes on.

Here’s the honest breakdown:

  • DuraFlex cap, 6-inch liner: $185-$260 for the cap
  • DuraFlex cap, 7-inch or 8-inch liner: $225-$310 for the cap
  • Labor and installation: $200-$365, depending on roof height, pitch, and chimney count

We quote you a flat price before any work starts. No surprise add-ons when the bill comes. Every installation is backed by our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the cap isn’t seated right, leaks, or anything about the installation isn’t done properly, one call brings the crew back at no charge. Wendell’s name and license number go on the work, and he’ll answer for it.

DIY or Call Us?

If you’re comfortable on your roof with a ladder, you can replace a DuraFlex cap yourself under one condition: the chimney is a single story, the roof pitch is gentle, and you’ve picked the exact right cap for your liner diameter. The job is straightforward enough: loosen the old clamp, pull the cap, seat the new one, tighten it down evenly.

But the moment we’re talking about a second-story roof, a steep pitch, a wet shingle roof, or any doubt about the liner condition, this is not a weekend project. A fall from a roof in Westchester County is a life-changing injury, and it happens to confident people every year. We have the fall arrest gear, the experience, and the ladders sized for the job. If you’re unsure, call us at (914) 537-6479 and we’ll look at it. If it doesn’t need doing, I’ll tell you that too.
