Sometimes, yes, especially if the backdrafting is caused by wind whipping across a shared chimney stack or by an oversized flue that has grown cold. A properly sized cap can reduce cross-wind pressure and stabilize the draft. But if the backdrafting is caused by a liner problem or a negative pressure issue in the unit, a cap alone will not fix it.
